I was surprised my visit last week to preview Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights wasn’t a more vampiric experience. Considering our current pop culture climate, I expected a madhouse of hissing, sexy vampires — an exercise in simple supply and demand. Wrong-o.
Sure, Dracula did have one of the eight haunted houses dedicated to him, where his many brides zoom and dance above your head. He didn’t make the cut for top billing, however; that’s shared among Wolfman, Chucky and the creepy puppet from “Saw.”
A few vampire types could be found at the Cirque Du Freak scare zone, a dark block of walkway thriving with characters pulled from Universal Pictures’ upcoming “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.” This modest presence of bloodsuckers, in my estimation, did not adequately address the vampire fever that’s hit the nation. One in every seven books sold last quarter was a Stephenie Meyer novel about vampires, accounting for 16 percent of book sales, according to USA Today. Her “Breaking Dawn” was Amazon’s best-selling product in 2008. Even Playboy magazine folded to the undead and themed their October issue “Bloodlust.”
There has to be someone out there who can come up with a new storyline that can be told with vampires involved. Am I in the minority here, or is there anyone else who feels this way? Maybe that’s the way vampire tales are supposed to be, but sometimes change is good.
